Game Over Movie Review: — A Game Changer Movie
I don’t know how could I miss this film, the 2019 thriller directed by Ashwin Saravanan is an absolute gem of a thriller, I don’t know whether to categorize it as a thriller. Rather I would say this is a roller coaster ride of emotions.
The central character in Ashwin Saravanan’s horror-tinged thriller is a video game creator, so it follows that her travails resemble a series of obstacles. Some of these are in her head. Sapna (Taapsee Pannu) is a survivor of a crime that has left her anxiety-ridden. In a sprawling house with only the household help, Kalama (Vinothini), and a guard for company, Sapna tries to get back to work while listlessly trying to improve her score on the classic video game Pac-Man.
Saravanan and co-writer Kaavya Ramkumar have created a tense and immensely engaging thriller that, although falling short of its lofty goals, offers a fascinating take on how violence against women leaves its mark on bodies and minds. The insistence on self-reliance and resilience among battered women isn’t always believable, and the connection between Sapna’s fears and a wider culture of assault needs to be fleshed out further.
Taapsee Pannu gives a strong portrayal of Sapna, who is hampered in both psychological and real ways by her phobias, and Vinothini is equally impressive as Sapna’s caregiver. As these women form a sisterhood and negotiate their way through the horror film’s twists and turns, they demonstrate that the horror film can work just fine without the presence of men. Game Over is, at the very least, success on this front.
